Understanding the Podcasting Revolution

Understanding the Podcasting Revolution
By Alicia Bankhofer

For this week's blog I decided to write about an article I read about the Podcast revolution. The article starts off by talking about how the technology actually developed and goes on to discuss all the possibilities that it has and what the future might hold for podcasting. The article states that "Podcasting is a natural extension of the blogging phenomenon, which has continued to grow over the past few years. Many podcasters start out as bloggers, only to expand their platform further to the audio blog."

In the wave of expanding technology we as future teachers really need to be prepared and updated on new types of technology such as podcasting. Kids these days are so far more advanced than the past generations. They are finding newer and quicker ways to discuss everything from political views to their dating life. The use of podcasting in the classroom opens the door to these students to be able to use this technology in very creative and unique ways. As a teacher you can do anything from record a homework assignment or even podcast a lesson for students to listen to while working out or just lying in bed.

I just bought the new i pod video nano last month and boy was I impressed with all that thing had to offer. I actually started getting Joel Osteen podcasts and even started getting podcasts on learning a second language. Then I started thinking....why couldnt I use this in the classroom when I become a teacher? Its funny that this was this week's topic because I have been doing soem research on podcasting and its endless capabilities. My first idea is to use this to reinforce the days lesson by creating a weekly podcast that goes over the notes in some type of creative way (music, video, etc). I also have lots of ideas for students to participate in. All in all I am very excited about using this technology in the classroom and can't wait to see just how much it will improve by the time I graduate.

The only issue I see with this technology is being able to bridge the digital divide and provide this technology to lower income students. I do see this being a major concern and wonder if someday the school system would provide some sort of assistence or discount in getting i pods.

This was a good artice and you can check it out by clicking here:

Great Article Ryan! I liked your idea on making a podcast each week to go over the lesson plan and notes for the students. That is something I did not think of. I also agree with you that as future teachers we need to prepare ourselves for the new types of technology such as blogs, podcasts, and wikis. All these different technologies will be such a great resource not only for our students but for all of us as teachers as well.
Good Job

I agree that podcasting is a big part of technology that can be used within the classroom. You had good exapmles of ways that it could be incorporated. I also agree that it could be improved for the lower income students to be able to have access to this new technology. Good Job!

I enjoyed your article...especially when used to reinforce the material used in the classroom. All too often do students totally forget what they were taught once they leave the building. As we all know repetition is the key...so if using a technology that children enjoy for educational purposes why not? Great Job!!

I did not think of podcasting as an extension of blogging until I read your article, now I see how taht is linked. I agree, these days children are becoming more and more technical savvy and we, as educators, must keep up.I think that the podcasts are are good way to reinforce lessons also. Its awesome that the students can take a lesson home a review it through music, some kind of audio, and visual effects not just by reading a book. Good Job Ryan!

I agree that students now are more technology advanced. I think it is a good idea to use pod casts in teh classroom. With the students being so technolgically advanced it is good that the teachers incorporate the technology. Good job.

Ryan, I really like your ideas on how to incorporate podcasting in the classroom. I like how u said that teachers can use podcasts to go over the lesson plans and give notes. Students have become so technolgically advanced and the education system should be keeping with the new advancements in techonology. Teachers should take advantage of all the technological tools they can find. I really liked reading your summary great job!

I think you picked a great article! I really liked how you included your own experiences and thoughts on podcasting. I agree that teachers need to keep pace with advancing technology. Costs would be an issue. Even if students brought in their own ipods and mp3 players, liability would also be an issue. My mom used to write grants for schools for things like new software and computer programs. Maybe this is a way to get costly technology into schools.

Ryan that was a really great article! Podcasting is really turning things around with its portability and capability of playing a variety of audio and video. As for future educators, podcasting could really turn things around and become quite a tool for students and teachers. It was good that you were already doing research on this topic and your article really showed it.

I could not agree with you more. Technology is a tool that is becoming more abundant in today's classroom. I believe that podcasting in the classroom will add more understanding and will make the lesson that week easier for the students to learn the material. You always do a great job at making people see your point of view and liking what you have to say about that topic.
Good job!!!!
